Dr Chandran's Story

Dr Chandran is an experienced Consultant Interventional Cardiologist working at Kingston and St Thomas’ Hospitals. Prior to this, he was a Consultant at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust for five years. Dr Chandran is trained in all aspects of adult cardiology with a special interest in valve disease, complex coronary intervention, and intravascular imaging.

Dr Chandran was educated at Westminster School and subsequently qualified as a doctor from St George's Hospital Medical School, London, in 2006. He entered specialist training in cardiology, where he rotated through a series of prestigious posts in London and on the South Coast.

Dr Chandran was successfully awarded a Doctorate of Medicine (MD Res) in recognition of his research at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. His clinically-based project involved investigating the molecular mechanisms contributing to patients having acute heart attacks. He has subsequently completed subspecialty training in coronary intervention at the Royal Sussex County and St Thomas' Hospitals.

After completing his training, Dr Chandran was offered an extremely prestigious, fully-funded interventional fellowship at McMaster University, Canada. During his fellowship, he was trained specifically in chronic total occlusions (CTOs) and percutaneous mitral valve intervention (mitraclip). He was also actively involved in numerous research projects from a world-famous center for cardiovascular trials.

Dr Chandran is a well-published researcher with research interests specifically within intravascular imaging and has an ongoing collaboration with McMaster University in Canada.

Dr Chandran treats patients with a variety of symptoms, including chest pain, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, palpitations, breathlessness, and blackouts. He organises and performs numerous investigations including ECGs, ambulatory ECG monitoring, echocardiograms, cardiac CT scans, and cardiac MRI scans as required.

As an interventional cardiologist, Dr Chandran has performed over 1500 percutaneous coronary interventions. He undertakes detailed intracoronary imaging (optical coherence tomography (OCT) and intravascular ultrasound (IVUS)) and physiological assessments (pressure wire studies) to guide his decision-making. He has experience in complex percutaneous coronary interventions including chronic total occlusions, bifurcations, and rotational atherectomy. In addition, Dr Chandran has expertise in optical coherence tomography (OCT) from his post-doctoral research investigating the molecular mechanisms contributing to patients having acute heart attacks.
